The Department of Applied Linguistics at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position in the ESL/EAP Program to begin in Fall 2019. Saint Joseph’s University’s Department of Modern and Classical Languages is seeking an ESL instructor to teach a semester-long academic English class for matriculated international students, beginning Fall 2019 with the option of continuation into Spring 2020 and beyond.  Must have a Master’s degree.  (Note: this course is for already matriculated international students who will be taking other non-ESL university courses in a number of different academic disciplines concurrently.)

The main goal of the course is to prepare students to succeed in an English-medium academic environment.  While part of the course content should focus on academic writing, it should also develop students’ academic skills holistically and may include such topics as reading strategies, note-taking, presentations and public speaking.  The instructor is welcome to collaborate with ESL faculty in the Department and utilize portions of pre-existing curricula as desired, and/or implement their own curricula, pending approval by the Department.  Ideal candidates will have earned at least a Master’s degree in TESOL or a related field and have experience teaching academic ESL to young adults in a university or pre-university context.

ABA Language Institute has two opportunities for instructors:

1. A class in transitional English for ESL students going to college begins in February and finishes at the end of April. It meets two nights per week from 6:00 - 10:30 PM. Global LT (www.Global-LT.com) provides private language training for corporate expatriates around the world. We are currently looking for a private ESL teacher for two of our clients in Newark, DE. These clients are a husband and wife who would like separate lessons at their home in Newark. Their schedules are flexible, but the wife is generally available in the mornings and early afternoons, and the husband is generally available in the evenings.

The English Language Institute is in a continuous search for highly motivated and qualified instructors to teach in our intensive English program. Basic function: 

The English Language Institute Instructor is responsible for teaching a wide range of courses, such as Academic Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Grammar, in order to prepare our students to be successful in a university setting. Each instructor is expected to teach 2- 4 classes per semester, as applicable, depending on student enrollment. Contracted teaching hours will be 4 hours per week per course, with approximately 2 hours of in-office administrative work per week per course, as well as monthly staff meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·          Provide high quality, student-centered English language instruction for ELI students according to established course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning adhering to ELI teaching philosophy and mission statement.

·          Attend orientation sessions prior to teaching.

·          Prepare a course calendar based on the syllabus per class, which is due before the beginning of the semester and needs to be approved by the Academic Coordinator.

·          Create supplementary teaching and assessment materials, as necessary, to facilitate the classes.

·          Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations.

·          Communicate with students regarding their performance and maintain weekly office hours per class for students.

·          Communicate with the Academic Coordinator and ELI administrative staff regarding teaching, students’ performance or other academic issues or any concerns.

·          Attend mandatory monthly teacher meetings.

·          Carry out administrative tasks associated with teaching and assessment, students' academic progress reports, weekly grades, attendance, and record of work through student information system (currently Desire2Learn [D2L]).

·          Assist as needed with curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation.

·          Allow for classroom observations and a follow-up meeting with Academic Coordinator at least once a semester.  If necessary, more observations will be scheduled. 

 

About the English Language Institute

The English Language Institute (ELI) is part of the Office of International Programs & Services (IPS) at Millersville University. The ELI provides six levels of intensive English instruction designed to meet the academic needs of international students attending Millersville University. Full-time ELI students receive a minimum of 18 hours of English instruction and 4 hours of supervised language lab work per week, depending on the program. Classes are taught by dedicated, experienced instructors trained in English as a Second Language instruction and holding a master’s degree or higher. In addition to language and academic instruction, the ELI offers students several cultural events, outside of class activities and trips to local and regional attractions, such as nearby locations like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore and historic Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The 14- and 10-week intensive English courses offered at the ELI are non-credit classes, but act as a bridge enabling students to meet admissions requirements for enrollment into the many programs offered at Millersville University – both at the undergraduate and graduate level. This offers a tremendous advantage to students to begin their time of study in the U.S. and step into their academic program, especially if achieving a high enough TOEFL or IELTS score had been a challenge. While attending the ELI, students may earn up to 15 credits toward their academic major through concurrent enrollment during levels 4, 5 and 6. Successful completion of ELI levels 4, 5 and 6, will allow students to step into their academic major full-time and equip them to be successful throughout their academic career at Millersville University and beyond.

If a long-term English program does not fit the needs or schedule of students, the ELI also offers a variety of short-term programs ranging from 2- 8 weeks. Topics include:

·          English for Specific Purposes (such as business, health sciences, STEM, etc.)

·          School Administrator Program

·          Teacher Training

·          Test Preparation (TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT, etc.)

Remuneration:

Currently, instructors are hired as part-time, contracted workers per course per term. Instructors are paid a fair and favorable amount for the course as a whole. Upon hiring and orientation, instructors may teach up to 2-4 courses per term, depending on enrollment. This position does not include benefits.

Qualifications Required:

Candidates must have a master's degree in TESOL, TESL, TEFL, applied linguistics, or other closely related field with appropriate coursework in language acquisition and language teaching. All instructor applicants should have relevant training and experience that includes elements of language teaching methodology, second language acquisition, language structure, linguistics, intercultural communication and dynamics and a practicum teaching experience. Excellent proficiency in English is required, e.g. CEFR Level Group C1.5-C2. Newer teachers just exiting their MA TESOL programs may apply to become part of our ELI’s instructor mentoring program.

Millersville University of Pennsylvania is looking to fill a contracted position. We have a need for an ESL instructor to teach for 5-6 weeks at a partner university in China. Flight, housing, and visa would be arranged by our office in conjunction with our Chinese partner. Salary: $3,200 for 5-6 weeks (based on about 64 contact hours). Curriculum would also be provided.

 

Multiple positions available, and this is a reoccurring opportunity every summer or winter. Timeline of start and end date are somewhat flexible, and will be determined between the candidate, our office, and the Chinese partner. So you would be able to schedule around other jobs if applicable.
