PTE Voices is the newsletter of PennTESOL East, a nonprofit professional association dedicated to the improvement and advancement of English language teaching, and the Eastern Pennsylvania affiliate of TESOL International. PTE Voices exists to provide a forum for writing that is practical, accessible, and relevant to our members and English language professionals in our region. Our audience are practicing English language teachers and other ELT professionals in a range of teaching contexts, including K-12, higher education, adult education, and teacher training.

Michelle Ferguson

Editor

Michelle has been the Editor for the PennTESOL East professional newsletter, PTE Voices, since 2023. Michelle holds a Master’s of Education with a concentration in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from Temple University in Philadelphia. Previously, she taught English in Croatia and China. Most recently, Michelle served as the Education Program Manager at HIAS Pennsylvania, coordinating education programming and services for newly arrived refugees and immigrants, coaching and developing a team of teachers, and collaborating with other educators throughout Philadelphia to advocate to ensure welcoming practices for ELs across the city. Now, Michelle is teaching at Drexel's English Language Center and supporting international students applying to universities in the US. Michelle is excited to be part of the work of PTE to support teachers and practitioners throughout Philadelphia by creating a space for the community to connect to each other's work, thoughts, and ideas. Outside of her work, Michelle enjoys reading, traveling, spending time with her friends, family, and cat, and watching too many Gilmore Girls reruns. 

Lisa DiMaio

Assistant Editor

Lisa is beginning her 27th year educating multilingual learners at Drexel University, where she teaches in the First-year Writing Program. Also, as the Coordinator of Multilingual Learner Writing Resources for the University Writing Program, she tutors in the Drexel Writing Center, trains peer readers, and facilitates workshops for faculty. In 2023, she received the Provost’s Award for Undergraduate Teaching Impact, which recognizes faculty who have made a distinctive impact through excellence in teaching.
