Get Involved

This is a page that covers the different ways that existing PennTESOL members can become more involved with the organization. If you aren't a member yet, the first step is to join!

Apply to Join a Committee

PennTESOL East members are encouraged to participate in several of our committees. Expand the sections below to learn more about the different committees, volunteer expectations, and how to apply!

Advocacy Committee

Advocacy is a central part of PennTESOL East’s mission to advance the field of English language teaching. The Advocacy Committee is charged with the planning, coordination, and oversight of the association’s advocacy work. Its work includes:

  • Establishing and maintaining a network of advocacy professionals and organizations across settings
  • Advocating and raising awareness with elected officials, decision-makers, and the general public
  • Producing and sharing information and calls to action related to advocacy for English language teachers, learners, and the field
  • Coordinating advocacy-related sessions at the conference, webinars, and other events and publications

Non-board members of the association are invited to serve as non-voting members of the Committee. You might be a good fit for this committee if you care deeply about equity, policy, and speaking up for English learners and educators in the public sphere.

To apply to join, send an email to board@penntesoleast.org with the subject line "Application to Join Advocacy Committee." Please attach a resume and in the body of the email, please tell us what interests you about joining the committee!

Conference Committee

Conferences are a primary benefit that PennTESOL East offers its members, and the Conference Committee plays a central role in making each event successful. The Conference Committee is reestablished for each conference and is responsible for:

  • Planning a conference program that aligns with the interests and needs of the membership
  • Securing the venue, facilities, and logistical services needed for a successful event
  • Developing marketing and registration processes that ensure the conference is accessible to members and prospective members

The Committee meets as frequently as needed for conference planning. Non-board members of the association are encouraged to join and may serve as non-voting members of the Conference Committee. You might be a good fit for this committee if you enjoy organizing details, collaborating with others, and helping turn big ideas into successful in-person or virtual events.

To apply to join, send an email to board@penntesoleast.org with the subject line "Application to Join Conference Committee." Please attach a resume and in the body of the email, please tell us what interests you about joining the committee!

Membership Committee

As a membership-based association, PennTESOL East depends on a healthy, engaged community of educators. The Membership Committee works to monitor and cultivate the growth and engagement of our membership. This includes identifying and proposing strategies, tactics, and initiatives intended to:

  • Attract new members, retain existing members, and reactivate former members
  • Increase member engagement and the value of the association
  • Deepen and share organizational knowledge of membership trends, needs, and interests

The Committee meets at least 4 times a year and produces a brief report for the Board after each meeting. Non-board members of the association are invited to serve as non-voting members of the Committee. You might be a good fit for this committee if you enjoy outreach and community-building and like using feedback or data to help grow and strengthen a professional network.

To apply to join, send an email to board@penntesoleast.org with the subject line "Application to Join Membership Committee." Please attach a resume and in the body of the email, please tell us what interests you about joining the committee!

Webinars Committee

Webinars offer PennTESOL East members a way to engage with the broader TESOL community in our region and beyond. The Webinars Committee is reestablished each academic year. Its work includes:

  • Planning a yearly webinar series aligned with the interests and needs of the membership
  • Receiving and reviewing presenter nominations and securing presenters
  • Developing marketing strategies to ensure members and prospective members can easily access webinars
  • Facilitating and moderating webinars, virtually or in person

The Committee meets as frequently as needed for webinar planning. Non-board members of the association are invited to serve as non-voting members of the Committee. You might be a good fit for this committee if you enjoy curating professional learning, working with presenters, and supporting the delivery of high-quality online programs.

To apply to join, send an email to board@penntesoleast.org with the subject line "Application to Join Webinars Committee." Please attach a resume and in the body of the email, please tell us what interests you about joining the committee!
