Temple Hiring Assistant Director, Language Learning Services
The Assistant Director/Language Learning Services develops and manages a suite of academic support services aimed at supporting language learners, including:
- a Conversation Partners program
- tutoring for writing and reading in the target languages
- a program of in-center workshops related to language and communication
- weekly language tables for ongoing language practice
This person takes primary responsibility for recruiting, hiring, developing and evaluating a group of approximately 20 graduate and undergraduate students who work in these programs. The incumbent also oversees daily operations for these programs, making work schedules, establishing policies and procedures, designing instructional materials, and so forth. The AD/LLS also contributes to a variety of SSC-wide projects, programs and activities.
In collaboration with key stakeholders at the university, the Assistant Director works to develop a fair and supportive environment for language-learners at Temple University. The Assistant Director seeks to identify and remove barriers to success for English language learners, and advocates for English language learners and students who speak diverse forms of English.
The AD serves as a resource for university-wide projects where expertise in language learning is required. In this capacity, the incumbent serves on a variety of committees and project teams outside of the SSC and contributes to efforts to improve the experiences and outcomes of language learners and international students who enroll at Temple.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
Master's degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field. At least two (2) combined years of relevant experience working in a university writing center or academic support center, and in teaching language acquisition courses at the college level. Experience developing or coordinating academic support programs. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Required Skills & Abilities:
* Familiarity with current research in TESOL, linguistics, applied linguistics or foreign language instruction.
* Familiarity with inclusive and interactive pedagogical practices.
* Knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning; Experience developing and leading interactive courses or development programs.
* Ability to work effectively on collaborative/team-based projects.
* Ability to train, develop, and supervise a team of student workers.
* Demonstrated interpersonal and client services skills, including the ability to interact with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.
Preferred:
Experience leading a teacher-development program.
Study-abroad experience.
Language learning experience.
