by Stephanie Johnson | 01/07/2022 7 January 2022 (Alexandria, VA) – TESOL International Association (TESOL) is pleased to announce Meg Eubank as the recipient of the 2022 TESOL Teacher of the Year Award. The award, presented by National Geographic Learning, honors exceptional English language teaching at all levels. Eubank will be recognized in Pittsburgh, PA, during the hybrid 2022 TESOL Convention & English Language Expo, 22-25 March. Eubank is currently a professor at Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania and a doctoral student at the University of Houston. During the pandemic, as she pivoted to a virtual environment, Eubank continued to focus on respecting the diverse needs of students and creating a community of learners. She continues to encourage other teachers who operate in virtual environments to, “Make sure to present information verbally, visually, written, recorded, and in as many ways as possible for students, and implement UDL (universal design for learning) strategies.” With over a decade of experience as a TESOL teacher, Eubank was initially drawn to the profession by a passion for building community among students from across the globe. “It is important to me to choose a diverse curriculum that reflects people from all backgrounds, races, and cultures that is both representative of my students but also introduces new ideas.” She has taught and assisted several thousand students from over 100 countries. In her work with local nonprofits, she has encouraged her diverse group of students “to advocate for themselves and connect with one another, building community and support.” The recipient of the TESOL Teacher of the Year Award receives a one-year membership in TESOL International Association, a selection of TESOL publications valued at $250, a complimentary registration for the 2022 TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo, and a cash award of $1,000. OXFORD, Ohio (Sept. 1, 2020) – Currently celebrating 25 years as an education reform initiative, Miami University’s Project Dragonfly is accepting applications now through early 2021 for graduate courses and master's degrees that offer extraordinary experiences through zoos and botanical gardens in the United States and in 15 countries throughout the world. http://ProjectDragonfly.MiamiOH.edu

Earth Expeditions are study abroad courses that take place online and in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas. Earth Expeditions courses can be taken as stand-alone graduate credit, or they can build toward the Global Field Program (GFP) master's degree. The GFP combines summer field courses worldwide with web learning communities, and students can complete the GFP master's part-time from anywhere in the United States or abroad. http://EarthExpeditions.MiamiOH.eduhttp://GFP.MiamiOH.edu

Project Dragonfly also offers the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) master's degree that combines web instruction from Miami University with experiential learning and field study through AIP Master Institutions in the U.S. Applications for Miami's 2021 cohorts are being accepted now with place-based experiences provided through Master Institutions in Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Jacksonville, New York, San Diego, Seattle and St. Louis. http://AIP.MiamiOH.edu

Graduate tuition for all programs is greatly reduced because of support from Miami University.

Concerned about COVID-19? As a pioneer in multi-faceted online, hybrid, multi-site, and experiential learning, Project Dragonfly implements diverse approaches for engaged education and is fully prepared to adapt courses as needed to maximize safety regardless of the situation in summer 2021 and beyond. For more information, see our FAQ: Can I start and complete this degree with possible travel and in-person restrictions due to COVID?

Teaching advanced listening-speaking on Zoom has been challenging, especially since this class requires a high level of student participation.

Here are some strategies I've used in the past few weeks:

    1. Let family members join the class...within reason. (Who doesn't want to talk to a toddler?)
    2. Use Zoom breakout rooms for small group discussions and projects.
    3. Let students take turns leading parts of the class. (I borrowed this idea from my colleague, Leslie Greenlee.)
    4. Acknowledge that Zoom is not the same as a F2F classroom, but we should all make the most of it.
    5. And even though I don't mind the occasional child crawling onto a mother's lap, I tell students to mute their microphones when listening to others.
Summer classes begin on May 18, and I'll need a lot more ideas to get my students and me through two L-S classes.  I'd appreciate any ideas!

    Thanks,

    Linda Fellag
